The Person Behind 4th & Data
Hi, I'm Daniel, an engineer and data analyst who spends most of his time in the world of business intelligence: databases, dashboards, and analytics tools like Python, SQL, and Tableau. Turning raw numbers into something useful is basically the job.
4th & Data started as a personal project where two things I care about, football and analytics, could finally collide. What began as a handful of scripts to answer my own questions turned into a full site: rankings, probabilities, predictions, and a running scorecard of every fourth-down decision in the league, all built on real data instead of gut feel.
And yes, Dax, the site's chat mascot, helps keep an eye on the numbers too.
The Story
I've been a Broncos fan since 2013, and it didn't take long watching games to notice that some of the most interesting moments in football have nothing to do with a big hit or a highlight-reel catch. They come down to a decision, made in a few seconds, with the whole game on the line.
- Go for it, or punt?
- Take the field goal, or chase the touchdown?
- How much does one single play actually change a game?
Announcers argue about these calls in the moment, but I wanted real answers, not just opinions. So I built 4th & Data to work through those questions with data and probability, the same math behind every prediction, ranking, and recommendation on this site.
It's also why the site grades itself in the open: every prediction gets tracked on Track Record, wins and misses both, because a model you can't check isn't worth trusting.
